Bio

Born in Southern California and raised near the sea, Kara Elizabeth Pewthers has been influenced by the range of environments and cultures that coexist in the area.  From the crisp blue ocean and the golden hills to the cool grays of commercial high rises and cement suburbia, Southern California, presented abounding examples of extremes.  These divergent vantage points have influenced Kara’s work and continue to do so today.

Another large influence on her work is her travels to locations all over the world.  Experiences such as painting the bush of South Africa, drawing quaint bridges in a small English village, or plein aire painting in the hills of Ireland, have enriched her creative expression and expanded her artistic views.  Exposed to art galleries, museums, artist studios, and street artists from all over the globe, she has gained a broad perspective and colorful infusions from other cultures.  Her travels have brought her to the colors and cultures of England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, South Africa, Jamaica, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Australia and New Zealand.

These broad experiences have infused her work with both color and vitality.  It is this continued exposure to both an urban lifestyle and many rich natural surroundings that consistently presents her new challenges as an artist.  Much of her inspiration is drawn from natural beauty she has found in her native California and abroad.  Ultimately, her childhood by the sea, and diverse cultural exposures throughout the world continue to shape the art she makes and the perspective from which she creates.
